Paper Weaving Online Class

Join me in creating six paper weavings over six weeks. This in depth experience into paper weaving will introduce you to new ways of working with paper. Explore basic paper weaving techniques as you create a set of four note cards. Next, you’ll make a shaped weaving, a table runner, a window/wall hanging, a double pamphlet stitched book with a woven paper cover and a woven paper lantern. We’ll explore a unique cutting technique that integrate layers of paper. You can use your own papers, purchase a kit containing gorgeous Japanese papers for all of the projects, or mix and match!

Dates: July 10 – August 14, 2019: Each Wednesday, a new lesson will be added to the on-line classroom that you will be enrolled in when you register for the class.

Price: $195 through 6/17 when price increases to $220. Purchase the Custom Paper Pack (pictured below) for an additional $60 (+ shipping) and receive all of the materials you need to complete the projects.

Registering for the class: Please register by June 17th if you plan on ordering the supply kit (I have to order the materials, cut the papers, pack and ship them – that’s why the deadline is so much earlier than the start of class). If you don’t need to kit, you can register up until the day class begins (July 10th).

Testimonials:

Helen is a skilled, generous, and very organized teacher. I enjoyed every aspect of the online class, from the clear video and written instructions, to the community feel, to the ability to work at my own pace. The projects and materials were lovely. The online format made it possible to benefit from Helen’s vast expertise without the time and cost of travel.  Thanks Helen! S.E., MA

The class was my first ever online class. The needed materials arrived in advance so I could become acquainted with them. The videos for each lesson were very clear and easy to follow. I appreciated having the pdf directions to refer to when I had a quick question. It was fun to see the results that other participants posted. I found the interactive communication with you helpful and delightful. Thank you! I look forward to another online class taught by you! B.H

About Helen: In 2013, I created 100 weavings in 100 days, which allowed me to explore a variety of papers and paper weaving techniques. I’m the author of five how-to books about paper crafts and papermaking, and the annual Twelve Months of Paper Calendar, featuring a how-to paper project for every month. I am a Colorado artist who constructs installations, sculptures, films, artists’ books and works in paper, and I teach, lecture and exhibit my work internationally. My interest in how things are made (from paper) keep me up-to-date on current paper trends, which I write about in my weekly blog, The Sunday Paper. I hold an annual paper retreat in my Red Cliff, Colorado studio each September.

 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do I need to register by June 17th if class doesn’t start until July 10th?
I need to know how many people wish to order the supply kit before I order those supplies. I estimate it will take them about a week for me to get those from the supplier, at which time I’ll still have to assemble, label and send them to you. Thank you for bearing with me!

Why is the shipping fee for the class $20 (in the US)?  The shipping fee covers shipping and handling: I have to purchase a box and a plastic sleeve to protect the papers, and some of this fee covers my time for processing the orders and cutting and packaging the papers. I run a one-woman show; thanks for understanding!

Why an Online Class?
I’ve taught these projects to hundreds of students in person over the past twenty five years, but since I can’t travel all the time (and perhaps you can’t either) I decided to develop this on-line content. This is an extension of the numerous how-to projects I’ve written about in my books and the Twelve Months of Paper calendar, but they are a bit more in-depth and elaborate, featuring skill building as well as creative ideas. In addition, you get to:

  • Work from the comfort of your own home or studio
  • Share ideas with an on-line community & view the work of fellow participants
  • Save on travel costs!

What kind of experience is required?
This class is for all levels but expect some challenges. I have taught all of these projects to beginners and experienced artists with success. You should be comfortable using an x-acto knife.

What if I miss a lesson?
Not to worry! The lessons are independent and can be done in any order, so if you miss one during the class, you can just skip ahead. All of the lessons will be available indefinitely. You get to make at your own pace!

Try me! Here’s a link to one of my on-line how-to guides, a Paper Slinky Tutorial that you can download to familiarize yourself with my teaching style.

Cancellation/Refund Policy: Register by June 17th, 2019 and receive early bird pricing (price goes up to $220 on 6/17/19). You will receive a full refund minus a $25 processing fee for cancellations prior to the start date (July 10th). No refunds after class begins.
