Have you heard of quilling? I remember becoming obsessed with the craft in 7th grade, but my paper interests soon went in other directions. Ann Martin creates sophisticated quilled jewelry (among other things) and writes a spectacular paper blog called All Things Paper. Here’s a great article about her work.

Ann is currently showing work in the show Pulp Culture: Paper is the Medium at the Morris Museum in Morristown, NJ. Many paper luminaries are included in this show, including Jennifer Falck Linssen, a Colorado artist I follow who makes hand carved paper and metal sculptures.

Check out this LA Times article about Ai Weiwei’s new installations devoted to freedom of expression which currently occupy San Francisco’s old Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. The individual panels of the massive kite (which winds its way through the entire industrial space) are all handmade from paper, silk and bamboo. I hope to have time to catch this show when I’m in the Bay Area in February. 

Congratulations to Dorothy Yule, whose book Memories of Science won the Meggendorfer Prize at the Movable Book Society Conference last week! Here’s a lovely video that shows off the book. BTW, Yule’s work is also featured in Playing With Pop-Ups.
