The Sunday PAPER: First Edition

The Sunday PAPER: First Edition

They keep saying that paper will become obsolete, yet artists, craftspeople, designers and creatives are keeping it alive and well. A healthy number of people are even making paper by hand (in some cultures they are still using age-old traditions). How cool is that? The Sunday PAPER is a resource for ideas and inspiration, all having to do with this amazing material. Each Sunday, starting with this edition, I’ll bring you stories and examples of people doing exciting, innovative, and beautiful things with paper, as well as links to interesting paperfacts I’ve unearthed from around the globe. I hope you’ll enjoy reading this paper, Papier, papel, хартия, Papir,紙, Papper, פּאַפּיר… and don’t hesitate to leave your comments and suggestions below!

I love this article about how Jenna Jafek-Jones got her paper flowers to Hollywood. Don’t they look real?

The Mobile Mill is a traveling paper studio: one Columbia College Chicago grad student’s quest to make paper bricks out of the paper that passes through her hands (among other things).

Laurie LeBreton’s  “Healing Machines” were inspired by Emery Blagdon, an outsider artist and farmer in Wisconsin, who filled his barn with sculptures that channeled healing forces.

I had the pleasure of meeting fiber artist Jo Stealey when I was a visiting artist last fall at the University of Missouri. Watch this beautiful video slide show of her retrospective at the Spitzer Art Center.

Enjoy your Sunday!

  9. Helen – thanks for the wonderful opening and inspiring first postings on your new blog. Congrats! Wish I could join you in Italy, too, didn’t work out for me this year. Looking forward to following your paper adventures, Kim

  10. Love this and that paper can not go obsolete as long as we crave it and keep the trees alive! I found a large piece of birch tree paper on the ground today and just find something so sacred about that! I love trees and all the things we get from them especially hand held art works! Sanna

I have been making doll heads from different paper pulp using a mold. Each one is so unique. They remind me of what I might find on an archeological dig. Is there anyway I can post them?
